While fire calls account for a relatively small proportion of CYFS's emergency responses, it is these types of calls that demand the most from our resources. It takes a significant number of firefighters to effectively fight a fire in a building. Every year CYFS responds to tragic fires that could have been prevented.

Central York Fire Services responds to emergencies where it is reported that hazardous materials have been released in the environment. There is a wide variety in the scope of these calls, dependant on the amount and type of material released. The vast majority are of low complexity and easily mitigated.

Central York Fire Services responds to medical calls and are trained to provide first-aid and use medical life-saving devices.
Central York Fire Services is dispatched to the scene of motor vehicle collisions to assist where possible. All CYFS vehicles have some extrication tools. Engine 411 is equipped with heavy hydraulic equipment and other rescue tools.
Central York Fire Services has seven on-duty crews in the Suppression Division assigned to five fire stations. These crews staff three engines, two aerials and one platform firefighting apparatus. These seven crews also have the availability of a tanker vehicle and a hazardous materials response vehicle with trailer for first run responses.
Central York Fire Services is a participant in the Province of Ontario Mutual Aid System. In conjunction with the other seven fire services in York Region, CYFS helps out our neighbours in times of need. Should it be necessary, CYFS can also call upon our neighbours to assist us.
This has proven to be a very effective system that ensures our residents get the emergency response and assistance they need when major emergencies affect our Region. A typical example of a situation that calls into play the Mutual Aid system are major weather events such as winter storms or tornadoes.
