Here are some tips to help you create your own home escape plan
- Draw a map of your home
- Pick a safe meeting place outside. TIP: choose a spot near the road where the firefighters can see you. A fire hydrant, the side walk, or a neighbour's house.
- Choose safe neighbours together where you can shelter if the weather is bad, or to call 9-1-1 in case you don't have your phone.
- Make sure everyone in the home knows the address to give to the 9-1-1 dispatcher.
- Give everyone in the home a special job. TIP: kids focus on getting out to the special meeting place first and calling 9-1-1, give teens and adults one job each. With these special jobs everyone works as a team to get out as quickly as possible.
- Time your escape! See how quickly everyone can get out to your meeting place. TIP: press your smoke alarms' test button to start the home fire drill.
